Public Meeting 06 February 2018

Frack Free Formby together with newly formed coalition group The Moss Alliance held a very well-attended public information meeting on the evening of 06 February at Formby Gild Hall.

The meeting, which was attended by over 200 concerned local people was presented with an introduction to fracking and informed about the threat posed by fracking in light of Aurora’s plans and recent ‘scoping’ request (see previous post).

Current actions of Frack Free Formby include: public meetings, social media presence, weekly stall in the village, a petition with over 3,600 signatures, networking with local and national groups etc. Also presented were plans to attend Aurora’s forthcoming community engagement meeting, encourage objections to the planning application, lobby consultees, hold another public meeting in April and information about the newly formed group The Moss Alliance. The meeting was concluded with a very lively Q&A session.

Information was given about how everyone can help:

  • Signing up as a supporter
  • Offer to help with leafleting
  • Donate to the campaign
  • Lobby MPs and Councillors
  • Write to local papers
  • Express concerns to any involved banks and energy companies

Further details will be posted on this website soon.

Exploratory Drilling on Altcar Moss

Aurora Energy Resources recently submitted a “scoping request” for opinion to Lancashire County Council (LCC). This confirms their plans for exploratory drilling / fracking on Altcar Moss. LCC have 5 weeks to provide an opinion, unless a longer period is agreed with the applicant.

Aurora propose initially to drill two boreholes at the Altcar Moss site. The first will be a vertical well which will be drilled through the entire thickness of the prospective Bowland/Hodder shale section. Core samples of the various shale units will be collected for analysis. A second borehole will then be drilled, initially vertically and then horizontally for approximately 1,500m within a specific target layer.

Aurora Site II

Whilst the exact position of the horizontal borehole has yet to be finalised, it will be contained within the subsurface area marked with a red dashed line in the above plan.

We understand that Aurora is planning a ‘public engagement’ exercise at Haskayne Village Hall on Saturday 17th February; further details to follow asap.

New website

Frack Free Formby is a residents led opposition group to shale gas development in Sefton and the rest of the UK. Further details about unconventional hydrocarbon extraction (fracking) together with information relating to the imminent threat to the Formby and the West Lancashire region will be added to the site over the following weeks. We will also post regular updates about the campaign and details about forthcoming events.
